In order to celebrate the Canada Day/July 4th weekend, Marshall and I took a trip to Kingston to visit my cousin. It's about a 3 hour drive from Montreal, and while relatively small (120 000 - ish) it's a very pretty city with LOTS of history.
Kingston was more or less founded and built by the Loyalists who came to Canada where they could freely and openly honour Mother England. Fort Henry was even built to guard off any invasions from our neighbours to the south, although it never saw any action and has become a "living" museum.
Marshall and I took a walk up to the Fort, and were greeted with this (above) stunning view of the Royal Military College of Canada - the Canadian sister school to Westpoint. The two schools work so closely together that there is even an exchange program for the highest calibre students, and annual "games" where students compete against one another.
We took the opportunity to visit an area about an hour of of town that is quickly becoming one of Ontario's better known wine growing regions. It was a wonderful sunny day visiting vineyard after vineyard for some free wine sampling :) No worries, our wonderful host and driver sampled little and let us have all the fun!
On our last day we finally got tickets for the lunch cruise through the Thousand Islands, which is one of the more picturesque cottage country around. Mind you, I wouldn't exactly call the summer homes in the area cottages, given that many are on privately owned islands and start and about $1 million! The view, however, is breathtaking, particularly from the water.
